Knit a Flower as follows:

This pattern was circulated by Eira Walters for the Kidderminster Arts Festival in 2014.
You need – 4mm needles (old size 8), double knitting wool in red, blue, white or purple for royalty.

Knit 4 Petals as follows –
Cast on 7stitches
Row 1 – k
Row 2 – kfb, k to last 2 stitches,kfb, k1 – you now have 9 stitches
Row 3 – as row 2 . You now have 11 stitches
Row 4 – as row 2 . You now have 13 stitches
Rows 5 to 8 – k
Row 9 – s1 then k1 and psso twice, k to last 4 stitches, k2 together twice. You have 9 stitches
Rows 10 to 12 – k
Row 13 – as row 9. You now have 5 stitches
Rows 14 to 16 – k
Row 17 – k1,s2, k1 and pass 2 slipped stitches over, k1. You now have 3 stitches
Row 18 – cast off

To make up your flower – sew the 4 petals together leaving 2 longer strands of wool to attach your flower to the railings.
For the centre you can use up any odd wooden buttons, stick in bits of fabric, or a sort of French Knitting strip – cast on 30 stitches in a contrasting colour, then cast off immediately. Roll up the thin strip and sew into the centre.

Abbreviations:-
kfb = knit into front and back of stitch,
psso = pass slipped stitch over

Crochet a Flower for the Jubilee Flowerfest

You need a 4mm hook, and wool in red, blue, white or purple (for royalty) with a different colour of your choice for the centre of your flower.
Pattern
Centre colour – chain 6 and join with a ss into the first chain to make a loop
ROUND 1 – ch2 (counts as 1st dc) work 11dc into the loop = 12 stitches. Cast off and change to red, blue, white or purple
ROUND 2 – into any stitch cast on the new colour and chain 2 (counts as 1st dc) into same stitch work 1dc. * Work 2dc into next stitch. * repeat to end working 2dc into every stitch = 24 stitches
Join with a ss into 2nd ch you initially started with.
ROUND 3 – 1st petal ch2 (counts as 1st dc) 2tr into next stitch, 2tr into next stitch, 2tr into next stitch, 2tr into next stitch, 1dc into next stitch
Repeat 2 more times = 4 petals = 40 stitches
ROUND 4 – into each tr stitch from previous round work 2dc followed by a ss between the two dc from previous round.
Cast off. You will need 2 strands of wool with which to attach your flower to the railings.

Fabric Flower Suggestion

Your flower can be made from any remnants of fabric in the colours, red, white, blue or purple (for royalty) so us up those odd bits of felt or cotton etc You will need a different/contrasting colour for the centre.
Knit and crochet flowers are approx. 20cm/4 inches in diameter so please try to make your flower that size. It may have 4 or 5 petals as you wish.
You may sew you flower or use fabric glue if it’s easier.
Please attach wool/string to the back of your flower for tying it onto the railings.
